AVON Breast Cancer Walk; Los Angeles, Sept. 11-13

This weekend, I had the privilege to attend (volunteer) at the AVON Breast Cancer Walk down in Long Beach. The weekend started Friday at 11:30 when my dear friend Barb and I met up at the Hyatt-Regency for lunch then check in at the volunteer station.
Both of us were assigned to the AVON Walk Shop which was located in the same room as the entire registration process for the women who would be walking 39.3 miles over the course of a day and a half.

The large ball room was packed with women young and old (oldest walker 83 yr). The registration even lasted from 2p-9p. Barb and I remained busy selling almost $17,000 in shirts, lapel pins, hats, jackets, and bags.
Sunday, we arrived at our volunteer station and requested that we return to help at the Walk Shop since we knew the details of that and thoroughly enjoyed working with Lisa and Mark (the head of AVON's Walk Shop). We spent from 12-5p assisting women with their supporting shopping needs.

We interacted with so many women new and seasoned to the AVON walk. Our booth was set up near the finish line so we were able to see the walkers as they celebrated their achievement of completing the 39.3 mile walk. What was the pentacle of the weekend was to see the hope and strength on so many "Survivors". All the women who were/are "Survivors" of this prolific disease had a sticker and hat that distinguished them from the others. There was also a special tribute to them at the closing ceremonies. Even women with out hair, currently fighting the disease looked strong and confident. It was a very empowering event to be a part of.
I am looking forward to being a part of this event in the years to come. To be reminded of the blessings that I have, and to rest in the hope that the Lord has my life's plan in His hands.
It was a sobering event and one that I will never forget.

Thanks to my parents for caring for Em and Nate and for Jeff making time to also be a part of their weekend. Also, to my kindred spirit--you know me so well and what makes me tick. Thanks for your love and support this past weekend and always.
