SF Pictures

Anna Marie (my cousin) with Jeff at the entrance of the ferry that took us to Alcatraz.

Re: Dodger shirt...Jeff and Anna had a bet going during the last baseball season in which both the Dodgers and Cubs played. Whose ever team won, the other person had to wear a jersey of the winners team for a day on this trip. Well, you can see who had to sport her loss. She was a great sport about it. Jeff had this one made with her last name "Stastny" and # 15 (for her bday 12/15). We arrived at the airport in SF about 30 min before Anna. When she arrived we were waiting for her with the jersey held up in front of our faces so she would see her name & # as she was walking into the terminal. We had a great laugh and it started the trip off on a very fun and lighthearted note.

New Asia was the restaurant that was recommended to us from the tea house we visited in Chinatown. I am certain that we consumed cow balls served on tripe (don't tell Anna).

We happened upon an arcade (Anna and Jeff grumbled as I was heading toward what they thought was a museum. This 'museum' featured about 150 working games dated as far back as the late 1900's (the flip viewers). All the games were .25 each. We spent quite some time here using up all the quarters we had on us. Jeff found an Atari game (race cars) and entered his name as the High Score winner. :-) "Prepare to qualify."

San Francisco - 2008

Most of you know that Jeff and I went to Chicago last December.  This decision was made after my cousin, Anna Marie was here visiting for the summer of 2007.  She lives and works in the city of Chicago.
While we were in Chicago (and had met up with her on Friday night and all day Saturday) we made a declaration that we would take a trip together (the 3 of us) every Dec for an extended weekend.  In Chicago we talked about New Orleans.  Come summer of '08 Jeff had a business trip (less than 24 hrs) in San Francisco.  He suggested that we go there instead.  Anna had never been and was willing to go.  So off we went this past weekend.
The time spent there was full to say the least.  We had a blast!! We laughed, we were terrified, we were lost, we were stuffed, and we were sore (from the walking).  While we were there, we met up with another cousin for dinner both Friday and Saturday night who lives there.  We had some good laughs as we told him about the days adventures.
In a nutshell:
Day 1: After arriving at our hotel and seeing our spooky 2 bedroom condo, we headed out and found a local hangout that we went to all 3 days.  Kezar (yummy beer, nachos, and fries).  This was delightfully discovered after walking through Haight-Ashbury area at 9 PM...not a good idea.
Day 2: We took public transportation lines to Alcatraz and toured the island.  From there went to Fisherman's Warf (yum-o chowder bowls and fish and chips and crepes) and then up to Lombard Street.  We headed down Lombard Street all the way south to a very sketchy neighborhood (meeting place suggested by cousin).  We unanimously decided to take a cab back to our 'hang out' and awaited dinner plans with our cousin.  We eventually met up with him at a pizza parlor that was all fresh and organic ingredients...the best chic pizza I have ever had!
Day 3: Headed out to Golden Gate Park...saw a lot of homeless and druggies (a lot were so young!)  From there decided to head to Chinatown.  We spent several hours here having tea tastings and shopping.  After our 'tea bar' experience they pointed us up the street to a place for lunch.  I am convinced we did eat cow testicle served on tripe.  Ugh.  As we were walking up and around the bustling Chinese markets, we came to an intersection.  As we were crossing in the street we literally had our sight, hearing, and smell change to North Beach (Little Italy).  From China to Italy.  Ahhhhhh.  We loved it here.  All 3 of us felt very comfortable and at-home in this area.  There were pasta shops, cafes, pastry shops, and restaurants that spilled out onto the side-walks that tickled our eyes and noses.  Our afternoon delight were cappuccinos.  From there we headed through Cow Hallow (upscale preppy town) back to our hangout to again await dinner plans.  Since we had some time to kill, across from Kezar was a very tiny burger joint.  It boasted of the best burger in California.  I suggested (even though we had NO room to budge) that we all split one just because we needed to.  So, we walked in and ordered their California Burger.  We decided to take it back to the hotel with us and split it up there.  When we did and took our first bites, we had wished we ordered 3 (one for each of us!).  I am not joking...it has to be one of the best burgers I have eaten--ever!  (I have eaten my fair share of burgers)  The textures and the flavors all danced in my mouth...it was amazing.
For dinner we went to an Italian place, again...SO GOOD!
Day 4: Travel home.  Both ours and Anna's flights were delayed several hours due to fog in SF area.  Long day.

Happy 40th Anniversary

We celebrated my folks 40th wedding anniversary on 11/22. This was a surprise that my sister-in-law and I have been planning for the majority of the year. The final days of preparations had their dramatic moments, but in the end, the end result was worth it. They were indeed, surprised.
The plan (as far as they knew) was to meet Jeff and I at Matt and Toby's for an anniversary brunch in Carp. They were also picking up and bringing my maternal grandparents who just celebrated their 61st anniversary on 11/16.
When they arrived at the house, mom knew that Toby wanted her to see the bedding that Toby's mom had just finished for their new bedroom. Knowing they were coming up to look at the bedding, we all "hid" in Matt and Toby's room with printed pictures of mom and dad (in 1970's) over our own faces. When they opened the door, we all said, "Surprise!" and then revealed ourselves to them. We had a total of 26 friends and family their to help celebrate with us. We then (as you can see) dined in the master suite. During brunch we had some share a thought, story, memory of mom and dad. For those who were interested (10 of us) took a tour of S.B. on the Santa Barbara Land Shark. After the tour, we met up with most of the rest of the group and had an early dinner on the Pier.
It was a beautiful day all around and I am so glad we pulled it off! Bub and Toby also have a post on their blog, check it out!

Happy Fall!

...or as some say, Happy Halloween!!

This year (as we have the past few) we have walked the neighborhood. In the past it has been with a group of friends and their friends.
We ended up walking separately this year and spent a lot of time walking.
On Friday, I stopped in at VONS and picked up several bags of candy...all at 50% off. I picked up a large mixed bag of pops, Tootsie, chews...and then about 6 or so more small bags that were my favorites (Skittles, Raisonets, Milkyway, Snickers, Twix, Peanut Butter Cups). I could not resist--they were $1.88 a bag!
While I was in line a "healthy" looking lady behind me comments, "Did you wait to buy out of resisting the temptation to eat it before tonight, that's what I do?" I said, "No, I just did not get around to it until now and fortunately it's all discounted."
She then replies, "That sure is a lot of candy!"
Under my polite smile, I scoffed (as if she knows how much we give away or how busy our house is or is not...)
When evening came, we walked and walked and walked. We were out for 2+ hours. The 2+ PRIME hours.
It did not occur to me until later to leave candy out (but then it would have been taken within several minutes) or have Jeff or I stay to pass out candy.
So, when we get back to the house at around 8:15ish, to my dismay we had only about 5 or so 'Trick or Treaters' before we turned in.

So now, all I can think about is the lady commenting how much candy I have, the temptation that is filling 2 large baskets in my home, and the humility of that entire exchange!!

Her 1st tooth!

Her first call was to Yaya.

It was bound to happen. I had not thought about this stage until one day I was looking at her bottom teeth and I noticed they looked different around the gum line. I inspected it further and to my shock, she had a tooth already popped out behind her baby teeth!! (this looked really weird...almost like a newborn with milk teeth)

So, I encouraged her to wiggle and twist and 'play' with the tooth to loosen it.
Days and days and days, maybe weeks or more went by until it was literally "hanging from a thread", so much so that the bottom edge woudl catch on her lip when she spoke, so for a few hours on this last day, she spoke very few words.
So many people offered their opinions about the removal process. Thanks but no thanks.
Through many, many, many fearful tears and frustration that the tooth would not just 'fall out,' she went to the bathroom and came out yelling (through sobs), "I did it, I did it, I did it!!" The thrill and releif slightly reminded me of the birthing process and my response.
Emily and I are very similar with our expressed emotions.
So then it was my turn. I went to my room and cried, "With big teeth come big attitude!!"

Emily, I am so proud that you overcame your fear of your tooth falling out!! Good job. We celebrated with a trip to Golden Spoon (frozen yogurt).

Lombardi Ranch

At the last minute, I suggested taking the kids to Lombardi Ranch. LR is our local pumpkin patch and farm.

When we arrived, Jeff had said he had never been. I was shocked. He has been in the SCV since 1983 and has never been to LR. So, it was a fun time for us all. Nathan had been a few years ago but was too young to remember it.

While we were there we bought pumpkins, tomatoes, and corn. The kids also enjoyed climbing on many of their cars, hay bails, and walking through Scarecrow Alley. We also bought tickets for the Tractor Train and the pony rides.

The picture below is of Nathan intently looking at Emily's loose tooth, stating "Oh my word, it's just right there!" when she wiggled it around (the tooth came out that afternoon).

Summer Happenings

Well, I have posted very little of the family since Nathan's birthday in May. My friend, who amazes me with her memory, has indeed brought out the fact I have much to post. I do not know why I think that 'posting' is such a big task. I have a dear friend who posts GREAT posts all the time (which I am so grateful for). Well, enough typing and more uploading!
However, it is late, and I should be off to bed...maybe a few for now to hold you off.

One of the fun things I look forward to during the summer is going to the beach (this was my first year really enjoying it). We went several times this summer sometimes with friends sometimes with family. It was a blast. The highlight of this year was that a friend of ours taught Emily how to boogy board. She loved it!!

Another highlight was my sister Katie visiting from Michigan. We did lots of fun things with the kids while she was here. It was a nice amount of time--we even got to meet her boyfriend!

This is a picture of the kids waiting for the pony rides at Griffith Park.

...Comment from a "Friend"

OK, it's actually irritating me now. I'm trying to make a habit of checking in on my friends blogs because I want to show a little interest in their lives and the work that they put into their blogs. You obviously don't care about this. Every time I hit your blog, as the page is loading, I pray that I won't see fruit. Please, anything but fruit! Alas, it is still there. And those peaches, they're huge. I hate peaches. And it's not as if you haven't had a myriad of things to blog about in the last 2 months. Your sister visited, you went to Shaver, and your children, the fruit of your loins, started school! I just don't get it.I've decided, in an effort to protect my sanity and my computer from being thrown across the room, I will no longer include you on the list of blogs I check until I hear that there is a "fresh" entry.

First Days of School

Emily started K at SCCS on Aug. 26, 2008

Emily was so eager! She could hardly sit still in the car as we drove to school...

After school, I took her to McD's for a special lunch.

Nathan started Pre-K (MWF) at Rise & Shine on Sept. 3, 2008

Last Days of Summer

Jeff's family has a cabin up in Shaver Lake. I have been a part of the short last minute weekend trips to the long planned out holidays for the last 15 years. It has been such a great treat. Though as time goes on, I am finding that I really despise the drive more and more, so I am not as inclined to encourage those weekend get-aways as I had been in the past.
So, this year, like every year we go for a "Bernards Summer Vacation". This group includes us (4), Jeff's folks (2), his brother (4) and niece & boyfriend and nephew. The holiday is typically Wed-Sun. This year we went in Aug. so the weather and water were at their prime.
I must admit, this was the best year ever! It would be difficult and frustrating at the same time to try and explain this on the blog, so I will not. I will just share some pics of the week with you.

Thanks mom and dad "B" for a fabulous last week of summer!!
(Literally, Emily started school the following Monday--my next post)

Abundant Harvest Organics

"Simply Bringing You the Family Farm"

(Pictured above is this weeks produce. Not pictured: head of red leaf lettuce that we ate for lunch!)

Our precious niece came to visit a few weekends back and she brought into the house a crate of fruits and veggies (so it would not get hot sitting in her car). Jeff was curious and asked her about it. She explained that it is a co-op of locals and local farmers that have organized an organic produce delivery system. The produce is picked and packed the same week you go and pick it up.

SCV has a p/u location in Valencia...which they are quickly outgrowing...they will be moving their p/u site to the COC campus sometime this year.

So, here are some of the wonderful benefits (the details)...
  • It's $19.80 per week (small box)

  • You can select a large or small box, which ever works for you...there is a big difference!

  • On the website, b/c they charge each week instead of by month, you can chose the weeks that you do not want to p/u (so you are not charged). If every other week works best for your family, you manually go in and select, "No Delivery" on the weeks or holidays you will not be there to p/u (10 days advanced notice). I have already selected the weeks and holidays that we will be out of town up until June of 2009!

  • The p/u day/time for our area is set for Saturdays between 8-8:30am, so we need to plan accordingly.

  • There is a one-time deposit for the crate, in addition to the produce cost. So, each time you go to p/u your new case, you swap it with the previous weeks empty case.

  • Each p/u site has a local host that you may contact at anytime. If for some reason you get a bad piece of produce, contact your host by phone or email and they will make sure you get a replacement in addition to your next weeks box. [Last week was the last of the freshest ears of corn. We had 2 ears that were really dry. I emailed our host and let her know, she had a bag of wonderful cucumbers waiting for us in addition to our normal box.]

  • Some benefits of this co-op is that we are supporting local farmers, eating so many more things than we normally would, and the produce is extremely fresh and organic!

  • Another item that I enjoy, in each box, is a news letter with "Fresh Facts" and information on the weeks produce. They list suggestions and include recipes (also on the website) for some of the produce. Also, before your p/u day, an email is sent (or you can view directly from the website) the produce that will be in the box so you can plan your weeks additional shopping/menu accordingly.

  • OK, a few more things...they offer "Add-Ons" each week which are add'l items such as raw milk/cheeses, range eggs, nuts, legumes, spices, chicken...You can also purchase a "Gift Box" (lrg or sm) in a disposable container (cardboard) to give as a 'Thank You', 'Just Because', or House Warming...It's a wonderful, original, and practical gift idea!

Do you get the idea that I am jazzed about this?

To be honest, when Jeff wanted to sign-up, I did grumble a bit; thinking how in the world are we going to eat all this 'stuff' each week...I don't even enjoy fruits and veggies all that much! Well, truth be told, having these crates of produce has inspired me to cook creatively and try new things! How many of you have a vase of fresh basil sitting near your sink or on your table!?

At the top of the page is a picture and below is a list of this weeks box to give you an idea of what we are enjoying:

  1. Seasonal Stone Fruit (Peaches and Pluots)

  2. Bell Peppers

  3. Red Spanish Pepper

  4. Yellow Spanish Pepper

  5. Russet potatoes

  6. Onions

  7. Tomatoes
  8. Carrots

  9. Lettuce

  10. Crookneck Squash

(Below: This was our first box; July 26th)

This box included:

  1. Seasonal Stone Fruit (Peaches)
  2. Mariposa Plums
  3. Armenian Cucumbers
  4. Bell Peppers
  5. Sweet Corn
  6. Basil
  7. Lettuce
  8. Onions
  9. Heirloom Tomatoes

Busy & Blessed Summer ... so far!

:o)
We are so blessed!

This summer has brought blessings, abundantly! Praise be to the Lord who is the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2) for blessing us with health and happiness.
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy
that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down
at the right hand of the throne of God.

Here is a list of all the fabulous events that have taken place this past June and July and what we will be looking forward to in August and September.
  • Hosted our 2nd year of swim lessons at our house. Barb, my dearest friend puts it..."You have saved 60+ children's lives by allowing me to teach them how to swim." I really never thought of it that way.
  • Emily promoted out of AWANA Cubbies (church Bible program) and Pre-K.
  • The kids and I participated in Vacation Bible School at a local church.
  • We got a dog for Jeff for Father's Day.
  • Jeff and I (along with 29 other family members) went on a Mexican Riviera Cruise.
  • Emily started art lessons.
  • Jeff and I are supporting locally grown organic fruits and veggies. We get a crate of peak season fruits and veggies each week (more will be posted later). It has broadened our fruits and veggie eating!!
  • The kids and I have enjoyed several trips to the beach alone and with family and friends.
  • The kids and I drove down to Rancho Santa Margarita (near Mission Viejo) for 2 days to visit old neighbors (we had a lot of fun despite the earthquake on our way to the beach).
  • Next week we are preparing for my sister Katie and her kids to be here.
  • Mid-Aug. we will be going to Shaver Lake for some fun in the sun with the Bernards family.
  • Emily starts school at Santa Clarita Christian 8/26.
  • Nathan starts pre-K MWF after Labor Day.
  • Both kids start AYSO soccer in September.

Even though is sounds busy, we have had plenty of time to swim in the pool and enjoy being home with each other and hosting BBQ's on the weekends.

Tuckered Out

This week we have been up at Grace Baptist Church for Vacation Bible School ("VBS"). It has been a lot of fun but the kids and I have been really tired by our mid-day quiet time. It is a big production up at GBC. There are over 1,300 kids ages K-6th gr. and something like 300+ volunteers. Nathan is able to participate in the 4 yr old room because I am one of the volunteers during craft time.

Today, after putting Nate down, I rested for about 20 min. Right as I was falling into a relaxed state, I heard/felt Emily breathing next to me. I told her to go wait for me down stairs and find something to do quietly. I heard her taking some pictures with the camera...But, by the time I came down, this is what I saw....

This is what Emily took while I was upstairs...Nice Job!

Happy Father's Day!

Gift, n.
: something voluntarily transferred by one person to another without compensation.

Jeff has been talking about dogs as long as I have known him. First there was Solomon (German Shepherd) 1993-2004...

At one point sometime in 2000, we brought home a black lab and named him, "Sammy". That did not go well. We put him up for adoption less than 1 yr later.

Ugh.

I think I have blocked that dog out of memory let me drop a few words...(shoes, plants, AC wires, sprinklers, picket fences, anything and everything--except his OWN toys.)

Since Solomon and Sammy, Jeff has still had the desire for dogs...so, we rescued a boxer named, Laila. We had her for about 8 weeks (2 of those weeks, Jeff was in Thailand). We blogged about her back in Jan. '06, "Dog Days are Here Again!"

We gave Laila to a "dog lover" and I am sure she is still jumping up and laying on her owner's bed and couch. Laila thought she was human and deserved every luxury. Emily was just 3 1/2 and this experience did not leave a good impression of dogs with her.

For about the last year, Jeff has been relentless on getting another dog. "It will be good for Emily"..."Nathan would love a pet!"

We asked Nate if he wanted a puppy. He responded, "I want a FROG!"

Almost every Saturday morning Jeff has been on the computer looking at adopting or buying a puppy. I finally said, "Maybe, when the kids are in school...but can we stop talking about it until then?" He was appeased for a few weeks.

Then he was back to the PennySaver and google. I knew that he wanted a dog that would be able to come in the house and be a part of the family. So, I properly appealed and we discussed that boxers were out--too big and crazy for the house. So, on to smaller dogs and hopefully, non-shedding...he put in a few calls to sellers/adoption groups...we went to look at some Lhasas out in Quartz Hill on Father's Day.

Well, as he picked out the one he liked, he softly asks, "Can we get two?" OMG!!

We only came home with one. We re-named him, Riley.

For those of you who are familiar with the Lhasa breed...they have looooong hair (typically). We are not planning to have him grow his hair out. In fact, he has already had his first grooming...and we are keeping it short! He is so cute!

Anyway, it is going well (I know it could be worse). He is 10 weeks old, 5.5 lbs. He was already potty trained on those potty pads when we got him. PTL :o)

So, Jeff, Happy Father's Day and Happy Birthday (it's his 35th this 4th of July) for the rest of your life! I love you so much. Loving this journey together!!

We will be celebrating together on Royal Caribbean for 7-nights in the Mexican Riviera! Kids and dog stay home.

Chocolate Mousse

Anyone interested in a really chocolaty sin-sation!

  • 1 3/4 cups whipping cream
  • 12 ounces quality semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3 ounces espresso or strong coffee
  • 1 tablespoon dark rum
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon flavorless, granulated gelatin

Chill 1 1/2 cups whipping cream in refrigerator. Chill metal mixing bowl and mixer beaters in freezer.

In top of a double boiler, combine chocolate chips, coffee, rum and butter. Melt over barely simmering water, stirring constantly. Remove from heat while a couple of chunks are still visible. Cool, stirring occasionally to just above body temperature.

Pour remaining 1/4 cup whipping cream into a metal measuring cup and sprinkle in the gelatin. Allow gelatin to "bloom" for 10 minutes. Then carefully heat by swirling the measuring cup over a low gas flame or candle. Do not boil or gelatin will be damaged. Stir mixture into the cooled chocolate and set aside.

In the chilled mixing bowl, beat cream to medium peaks. Stir 1/4 of the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture to lighten it. Fold in the remaining whipped cream in two doses. There may be streaks of whipped cream in the chocolate and that is fine. Do not over work the mousse.

Spoon into bowls or martini glasses and chill for at least 1 hour. Garnish with fruit and serve.

(If mousses are to be refrigerated overnight, chill for one hour and then cover each with plastic wrap)

Happy 4th Birthday to Nathan!

A note to my Nate.
You are so precious and so precocious!
I said to your daddy after an evening meal this birthday week, "I would have thought 'Mugoo' would be in a different phase by his 4 yr birthday."
I remember saying over a year ago, "We just need to hold on until three--let's just get to three." Now, I find myself saying, "Hold on until he's five!"
Oh, what the Lord has planned for you (if only I had a glimpse)!
You are a joy to have around. Your smile and excitement for everyday things brings me pleasure. I enjoy watching you play and LOVE listening to you sing. Here are some things about your life these days...

  • You LOVE to play on the piano
  • You LOVE your stomp rocket
  • You LOVE your "blank" and "Turt"
  • You LOVE to abbreviate words--today, your flip-flips were, "Flips" and PaPa was "Pop" and YaYa was "Ya".
  • You call Shredded wheat "Sugar Pillows" and you LOVE to eat them dry
  • You LOVE your marble-race game
  • You are very fearful of search lights in the sky and the spa light (not the two big pool lights)
  • You LOVE to funnel things back and forth into containers
  • You LOVE Dr. Pepper soda, and call it "Pep"
  • You LOVE to "Hold You" (snuggle with me).
  • You LOVE to smell things (deodorant, candles, blankets, mommy, soap)
  • You LOVE re fried beans, broccoli, hot dogs (not cut up or in a bun), 'special milk' (vanilla soy), peanut butter and honey sandwiches, olives, chicken, turkey, pita chips, smooth yogurt, applesauce with a sprinkle of cinnamon, pizza eggs, poached eggs on toast, cottage cheese...you will almost always try something once.
  • You do NOT like regular milk, cheese, yogurt with "chunks", carrots, mac n cheese, spaghetti, quesadilla, (a lot of what Emily eats)...

You are a handful with your short temper and loud frustrated screeches. But, I love you to the end.

P.S. Daddy keeps reassuring me it's still "only a phase".

Since your birthday fell on a Wednesday there were several activities taking place...but here is a recap of our day together this 5/7/08:

  • 7:30am-woke up to mommy and Emily singing happy birthday with a candle for you to blow out. Breakfast also had a candle in it
  • 9am-take Emily to pre-school
  • 12pm-get Emily from pre-school, head to Chuck E. Cheese's
  • 5pm-daddy's home, head to Chili's for dinner (first time)--you ordered off the kids menu, "a corn dog with broccoli". You ate it all!
  • 6:30pm-Cubbies promotion at PBC
  • 7:15pm-Rite Aid for 'rainbow sherbet' on a cone
  • 7:45pm-opened your birthday gift (stomp rocket) and played with it together out side
  • 8:15pm-good night my precious birthday boy
